Can the laser be used on dark skin?

The Enlighten laser employs ultra-short picosecond pulses to target and shatter pigment with high pressure, avoiding the use of heat. This approach reduces the risk of hyperpigmentation and blistering, offering a gentler and more effective treatment.

How many treatments will my tattoo need?

The complete removal of most tattoos typically requires between 5 to 10 treatments, with the number of sessions varying based on individual factors and the tattoo's characteristics. Key considerations include the tattoo's age, ink color, density, placement on the body, and the client’s unique immune response.

Cosmetic tattoos, in particular, necessitate additional time and sessions due to the precision required in removal. The composition of ink used in cosmetic tattoos differs from that of traditional tattoos, underscoring the importance of choosing a specialist with specialized expertise, such as those at The Missing Ink.

Prior to commencing treatment sessions, we encourage you to schedule a consultation with us. During this consultation, we will conduct a thorough assessment of your tattoo and tailor a customized treatment plan specifically designed to meet your removal needs, ensuring clarity and expectation management throughout the process.

Will my tattoo be completely gone?

In many cases, yes. However, certain ink colors pose greater challenges for complete clearance. We offer complimentary consultations to assess these factors thoroughly and establish realistic expectations. You'll receive upfront information regarding any potential pigment remaining post-treatment.

Is there any downtime after the procedure?

Patients can resume regular activities immediately after treatment. However, it's advisable to refrain from swimming for 3 to 5 days afterward. Please use sunscreen and avoid prolonged sun exposure. Detailed instructions for maintaining the treatment area will be provided during your consultation and after each session.

Does the color of the tattoo matter?

The ink color significantly impacts the ease of tattoo removal. Black and grey tattoos absorb light uniformly, making them easier to remove quickly. Darker colors like dark blue and brown also tend to respond well to removal treatments.

Does the tattoos age matter?

An older tattoo is typically easier to remove than a new one. As tattoos age, they naturally fade as the body absorbs some of the ink, simplifying the removal process. In contrast, newer tattoos retain their full ink density, requiring more sessions for effective removal.

Does the location of the tattoo matter?

The location of your tattoo significantly impacts the efficiency and effectiveness of laser removal. Tattoos closer to your heart, such as those on the upper body, are generally quicker to remove due to better blood circulation, which helps carry away the ink. Mid-body tattoos also benefit from this proximity. In contrast, tattoos on the lower body, including hands, wrists, lower arms, feet, ankles, and lower legs, are more challenging to remove. While removal is still possible, these areas may require additional sessions, and progress between sessions may be less noticeable compared to tattoos on other parts of the body.

How does laser tattoo removal work?

The Enlighten III utilizes a laser to remove tattoos by breaking down the ink on the skin's surface. The laser treatment causes the ink particles to disintegrate, allowing the pigmentation to be safely absorbed and excreted through the body's immune system. As a result, the tattoo fades progressively with each session until it is completely removed.

How long do I need to wait between sessions?

While the laser manufacturer recommends 6 to 8 weeks between treatments, we have found that waiting 12 weeks reduces skin discoloration and decreases the number of sessions needed for removal. Patients with darker complexions may need more than 12 weeks between treatments to avoid hypo-pigmentation.

What can I expect during treatment?

The treatment duration depends on the tattoo size and anesthesia use. An extra-small tattoo may take 3 minutes, while an extra-large tattoo can take up to an hour. After cleaning and shaving the skin, the laser probe is applied to the treatment area. You will feel pressure and heat, similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. Ice is used to alleviate discomfort. Once the tattoo is treated, the nurse will bandage the area.

Are results permanent?

Yes, the effects of laser tattoo removal are permanent.

Can I go in the sun after treatment?

Avoid sun exposure on the treated area until it fully heals, typically 4 to 8 weeks after the session. If you must go in the sun, cover the area and use broad-spectrum sunscreen.
